The word 'Mewnlifiad' is very rarely spoken these days but one would have to be totally on another planet if one is not aware that there is a major influx of English 'White Settlers' to Wales. I doubt very much if for the most these are 'Assylum Seekers' or 'Economic Refugees', although a signifigant number are heading into Wales as 'Economic Colonisers' but for most part many are seekers of the 'Good Life' and some no doubt are 'escapees' from England's multi - cultural society desribed by some as 'White Flight'. This 'White Flight' does not only affect rural Wales, on either side of the M4 or other wise the Carmarthen to Paddigton Rail Line, in a number of previous villages now becoming small town the new private housing developments are much desired by relativelly well off 'English Migrants'. Meanwhile for real 'Assylum Seekers' and economic or social refugees from Eastern Europe and the third world have to make do with 'Social Housing' on decline and demising fringe area Council Estates in migration 'Target Towns' as Wrexham, Newport, Cardiff and Swansea recently declared 'Sanctuary City' (an idea there for my Assyrian Rod Alternate History blog maybe?).
Sanctury City' an American idea it seems, but then Wales has always had good reputation for providing 'Sanctury' as to Basque Children during period of the Spanish Civil War but Wales was not always welcoming to migrants, not least to the Irish. There have also been Anti - English Riots as at Lold in 1868, Anti - Jewish Riots particularly in Tredegar in 1911 (100th Anniversary next year 2011), there was also Anti - Chinese Riots in Cardiff 1912 and Anti - Coloured Riots in 1919. In our own times there have been race riots in Cardiff and Wrexham. In the 1980's English Immigration into rural Wales became a major radical Cultural Nationalist issue and campaigns, this led to the Meibion Glyndwr 'Arson War'. An hostile media and 'Anglo - Left' sought to portray this has being similar to the KKK or 'Arson War' in Montana USA against German Religious Settlers there, although these examples are way out of line later such Anti - Welsh diatribes would signifigantly silences 'Welsh Opposition' to the Mewnlifiad.
Nevertheless following the 'Meibion Glyndwr' some say succesful 'Arson War' the 'Mewnlifiad' was taken up politically, by 'Cymdeithas Cyfamod' and later by 'Cymuned'. The Anti - Welsh stance taken by the English Media against these genuinly concerned bodies was so harsh in painting 'cultural concern' as being 'Welsh Racism' that since many of those involved in this first Anti - Mewnlifiad Campaign have gone to ground. Today these once leading opponents of 'Y Mewnlifiad' are very silent on the issue and to chose to 'dive & duck' away from any contraversy having had their knuckles tapped so hard. Thus, even though the rural areas are facing an even bigger 'Mewnlifiad Fawr' with much of West Wales now becoming a 'Greater Little England Beyond Wales', Powys becoming a 'Sais Kossovo', maybe a future 'Welsh Palestine' west of Offa's Dyke and Fflintshire falling to Colonisation by Chester (see previous post Fflintshire in Focus). Whilst BBC Wales seems detimined to make their 'Media City' in Caerdydd very much an 'English Media City' with policies of attracting previous BBC programming and programme makers from BBC Bristol and elsewhere to 'Bae Caerdydd' or maybe 'Y Crachach' Pontcanna Patagonia, if they learn 'Cymraeg' of course.
It is obvious to me that no matter what it's called or detirmined as 'White Flight' or whatever, that 'Mewnlifiad Fawr' is well under way but no one wants to raise this 'Hot Issue'. Though even Plaid Cymru members whisper that they lost the Election in Ceredigion because of all the English now living there. Whilst Welsh Nationalists in Llanelli, Pembre and else where fully realise that all the new Housing Developements are not for local people but 'English Migrants'. However, none of the 'Usual Suspects', not even of the Patriotic Fringe wants to raise their heads above the parapet on this 'Hot issue' which would invite a 'tirade of trouble' describing them as 'Racist' and no better than the 'Welsh Defence League'. However, all that can be avoided if only the 'Nats' thought outside the box, if that is possible?, quite simply realise that the opposite to the inward English Immigrant' is the outward 'Welsh Emmigrant'. I dare say possibly for any one English 'White Settler' coming in to Wales, there is one or more Welsh persons leaving Wales, not least the young and educated. This is as true of Wales as it is of Kossovo, Bosnia and the Baltic States the young want to get up and go West or East in Welsh case and, indeed this raises the question why not?
Lets also keep in mind that since Tudor Times the Welsh have been leaving Wales to seek 'Fame and Fortune' as indeed do many of our well heeled 'Celebs Cymru' have done down to this very day. So too our poor and unemployed, 16th Century London was full of 'Dumb' Welsh Beggers as much as poets seeking patronage, later in 18th century thre were many Welsh Milk Maids in Islington and who weeded the Market Gardens, why Cardi Girls! There was a time, less than 100 years back when 'Welsh Creameries' were as common in English Cities as Asian shops are today, so it does work both ways but still the very existence of England is not threatened with 'Ethnic Extinction'. This is an 'Hot Issue' ignored at your Welsh Nationalist peril but this time around focus on 'Welsh Emmigration' not 'English Immigration', the campaign then should be such as about 'Jobs and Homes'. The over riding all embracing national struggle, that of a 'Tarian Cymru' Anti - Colonial Movement on a Land and Liberty platform and when? How's about now before it becomes totally meaningless to be crying 'Dal Dy Dir', as leave it and there will no way we will be able to say 'Cymru Ein Gwlad' much longer.
