Am I Anglicised? Am I Acculturalised, the fact of the matter is who is not at least slightly so? It is then by degrees and please don't tell me that 'Yr Hen Iaith' is a barrier to such. That's not been the case since the Tudors provided the Welsh With a Protestant Bible and Elizabeth I got the Bards to toe the line via two Eisteddfods at Caerwys in the 16th Century. Unfortunatly for 'Cymraeg' it was hi - Jacked by the Tudors and by Cromwell, see Act for the Propagation of the Gospel in Wales. Clearly for much of Welsh History up untill the great 'Welsh Ghost Dance' aka 1905 Religious Revival Welsh Identity and Consciousness owed much to be based on Tudor Protestantism, from anglicanism to post Hanorvarian Methodism and later Non - Conformity. It is interesting to note that most popular Welsh Ballads of the 18th Century had a 'Political Consciousness' which was very much 'British' aka 'English' in their Anti - Irish and Anti American sentiments.

The rise of Welsh Romanticism in the 18th Century and later 19th Century Liberal 'Cultural Nationalism' was no guarentee of a Welsh National Identity and Consciousness. Just look at the 'Society of Ancient Britons' and their 'Cambro West British Identity', to advent of 'Y Cymmorodorion' between 1715 and 1745. If only Iolo Morgannwg had fully succeeded in his radical republicanism combined with radical romantic Pagan Cultural Nationalism, then we would be much clear about our National Identity and Consciousness today. Instead it's Gwallter Mechain who comes to the fore and this romantic reawkening becomes the product and platform of a new Victorian Cambro - British Capitalist Class that leads to the irony of such has Hugh Owen and his Southwark College seeking to 'Anglicise and Acculturalise' young Welshmen as fit to manage and run the Industrial Revolution to profit from an expanding British Empire.

It is in this period following the Welsh Revolutionary years of 1816 - 1839, that native budding Welsh Capitalism would tie itself to British Capitalism and British Empire. Thus whilst throughout Europe in 1848 there are Radical Republican Nationalist Risings known as the 'Spring of Nations', we get the 'Blue Books' and the conclusion of the rural 'Rebecca Rebellion'. For the rest of that century see such has rise of Welsh Non - Conformity, Welsh Liberalism, Cymru Fydd and Tithe Wars to the Red Dragon Trade Union and to D.A. Thomas and the Cambrian Combine Dispute that gives rise to the Tonypandy Riots of 1910. Not least consider the year 1911 and the Llanelli Riots and Investiture of that year, it will become obvious that there is a Cultural Nationalist Wales in existence that is not so dismilar from that which exists today if one considers even Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Eisteddfods and Welsh Language Industry in general. Just think Owen M. Edwards and his book Wales - In The Story of Nations and it's conclusion, see link below:

Despite the 'Language Student Troubles' and 'Radical Rural' Cultural Nationalists blips in the 'Sixties', not least regards the oft reminded of 'Cofia Dreweryn' militancy and later 'Arson War' against holiday homes from 1979 to mid 1990's. Traditional Cultural Nationalism generally remains in it's 'National Identity' very much coloured still by an older Cambro - West Briton - Cymric Consciouness. Unfortunatly at present the earlier rural radicalism has all but disappeared into saving schools, pubs and 'ShamelessS4C', not the much required Language, Land and Liberty Struggle against Cheque Book Conquest and Colonialism that is contributing to the ethnic cleansing of rural Wales by means of unemployment and depopulation. The gist of what I am saying thus far is that no, language and culture does not needs create a National Identity or a 'Cymric Consciousness' alone, if it did then Wales would have as Ireland and other countries become Independant long ago but it has not.

Meanwhile there is still no clear cut detirmination as to what makes ones National Identity or rather defines it to oneself or how others see us. There are still those who insist it is 'Yr Hen Iaith' but what use is that in a Wales that is truelly fast becoming for real Multi - Cultural where there is not a real hope of a 'snow ball in hell', the majority ever becoming 'Cymraeg' speaking. Not unless the whole primary educational system becomes becomes exclusivelly run through the medium of Welsh which I support idea of. Those who other wise hold fourth of such a 'Welsh Speaking Wales' are 'Y Crachach' and proffessionals whose existence depends on a Cymraeg Speaking Population, much as other 'proffessionals' need the underprivelleged and unfortunate as victims rather than radical activists made fit to fight the Global/Capitalist/Commercial System that is destroying them, like wise regards present day CyIG style 'Language Struggle' more for advancing 'Crachach Carreers' than providing jobs for Working Class Youths in rural Wales.

But Language and culutral survival and sustainability aside, the question is what creates National Identity if it is noot needs be Language', leave Culture out of it as that is very subjective to say the least. Myself for starters, have no doubt about my Welsh Identity and despite no doubt having been some what 'acculturalised', I am far from being 'anglicised'. I am quite clear in my 'Welsh, if not 'Cymric Consciousness' not based at all on rugby as are many of my fellow 'Hwntws' but via varoius 'stepping stones' in my life, including in this being a regular reader of the Western Mail from an early age. As this paper made me aware of the totality of Wales, of Welsh Life and Society, it's politics, personalities and issues of the day. Of course next is the fact that I am a Welsh History Enthusiast, maybe a 'Geek', I need now hypno theraphy if ever I wanted to come off my daily fix in this area of my life and this might be a need if I am to become a retired Welsh Remembrancer as sooner as later.

In conclusion, yes 'Yr Hen Iaith' is important and as much we can needs be done to save and sustain but for my part I will ever remain weary of a Welsh Language Industry that props up a surplus petite bourgeouise. Not least sustains a culture that more and more becomes safe and slavish fearing patriotic political radical nationalism which is just the direction that cultural nationalism is heading back to, good old reliable Cambro - Britishness! So what is the measure of National Identity and a true 'Cymric Conciousness', as for National Identity whatever ethnic group, culture or language in the Wales of today that must rest on the desire and will to be a Citizen of Wales. As it would be to be a citizen of most countries and Nation States, inc English speaking ones as America and Canada, Austrailia and New Zealand.

At end of day that is about political allegience to a Nation State, an ideal recieved from the French Revolution in concept of founding of a Republic based on a common citizeship and rights of a popular sovereignty and self detirmination as opposed to a Monarchy or Empire. A particularly Cultural Consciousness will follow and maybe 'linguistically', Sports or Reliously or as in my case historically based, as may be ones life experience or, I guess emotional or other needs to make it possible for one to share a community of interests, experiences and pusuits in life. However, when all said and done there will always be need to persue three roads towards advancing a National Identity, which are:

* Political and Popular Sovereignty in struggle for National Self Detirmination, the way forward and you just got to believe it, how many times do I have to tell you? Come 2012, I might have to say 'I told you so!', so why be so reluctant to get radically real before it's too late.

* Cymric Consciousness Campaigning in areas and walks of Life and Society, the way forward is as below. A way I had hopes of Balchder Cymru following but no they still want to play at being 'Sixties Wannabes' but now with an hint of opportunist Irish Socialist Republicanism in the new reworked 'Balchder Blend', sigh!!! When will Adam et al give up on this infantile imature adventurism which is going no where and will only mess up and undermine is more worthy efforts and endeavours regards Cambria Band and Medieval Interests? In both areas of which he sets a shinning example of what such as The Black Panthers strategy was based on, that being a stress on Community involvement and action. Not what is becoming a parody of patriotism re parading about at Abergele, Tryweryn and Cilmeri annually. Whatever, some one out there might just yet be wised up enough to pay attention and become a 'Barrio Warrior' or should that be an 'Eryr Adfywiadwr'.

The way forward is obvious Cymuned and Llais Gwynedd must recognise they have no long term future seperatly whatsoever at all, FIN! So must get real and unite in a new movement of the rural 'Cymric Heartlands' in struggle for popular radical cultural advance and 'language' sustainability. In a struggle for Language, Land and Liberty, yes! Go on, be daring, get exciting you know you all need the big new initiative dramatically launched at Vyrnwy on or abouts 21 Hydref as the new 11th hour dead line, if not before?
