A British offensive
SIR – Dai Woosnam (Letters November 12) is not the only one to have been surprised and offended by the “You-must-wear- a-poppy!” offensive we’ve endured in recent weeks.
It was even debated on Newsnight the previous night, though I feel Dai is wrong to blame TV companies.
The blame lies with the UK government and elements of the British establishment keen to promote “Britishness”, “the ties that bind”, etc. Why? In general, it’s due to fears about devolution, which they view as a Pandora’s Box. More specifically, it’s about the looming Scottish referendum, that might change everything.
These fears not only account for the OTT poppy offensive, but a whole host of other things including Team GB and the shameless exploitation of Bale and Ramsey in the Olympic kit (I hope no-one believed this was about football.)
Next year we can expect the same with the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics. After that, the British establishment doesn’t seem to have any convenient events or commemorations for a few years. But rest assured, the “Britishness” offensive will be resumed with a vengeance in the run-up to the Scottish referendum.
It will also get very dirty. If you think News International’s behaviour has been unacceptable then you’d better not think about what British Intelligence will get up to in Scotland in the next few years.
For me, the real sadness, and irony, of the Poppy offensive has been that we’re told it’s to honour those who gave their lives for freedom of thought and expression, yet it has been used to almost intimidate people into following an officially dictated attitude.
