LAND and LIBERTY: Popular Resistence To Enclosures in Wales 1793 - 1830.

..
Rhyfel y Sais Bach 1826. A Feature On Line. On the 24 May 1826, after months of direct action against enclosures on Mynydd Bach, Ceredigion, a youth sounded an horn from atop Mynydd Bach. Siaci Ifan y Gof was the youths name, and the sound of the horn was a signal for the people to assemble on Mynydd Bach to engage it what would be the final conflict against the enclosures on the mountain. However, far from end of the story of Siaci Ifan y Gof and others who had engaged in decisive action of 24 May 1826.
.
There is no memorial in homage to this 'Land and Liberty' struggle, but would it not be great to have a sculpture of Siaci Ifan y Gof, sounding his horn and inscribed upon a base, a couplet of the time:
.
Fe dwythwyrd yr udgorn
ar ben yr Hebryg Fawr
Dach mwy na mil o ddynion
ynghyd mewn hanner awr.
.
The horn was sounded on Hebryg Fawr.
More than a 1000 men came together
in half an hour.

The flag by way is my own recent invention, a Red Pitchfork symbolic of popular rural revolt, to add a bit of colour and for dramatic effect. However, why not adopt such flag for use in any protest where land is the issue, as for example in protest against land grabbing for pipelines or windmills etc. Further, maybe 24 May would be good date for an annual 'Land and Liberty' Rally perhaps, also this flag makes a good May day flag, not least in protest against present day rising price of food, a rising situation similar to Wales of the Corn Riots of 1793 - 1801. For further information check out Wikiapedia but more important get hold of the book: BEFORE REBECCA by David J.V.Jones, published by Allen Lane. Excellent read.

Photo below was taken just below memorial to four local poets, one poet which has been set up on Mynydd Bach, close to Llyn Eiddwen. Mynydd Bach can be approached via Lledrod or Trefenter, choose a day with good weather, when I went there was an howling gale and I could hardly stand straight long enough for the fotos to be taken. On a nice day, Mynydd Bach in area of lake is splendid, with great view to the coast, ideal for a family outing with a picnic in mind.
