WELSH LAND WARS: Begin in the age of Conquest & Colonisation 1094 - 1294, the clearing out of the Welsh Native from the fertile lowlands into the none to fertile highlands gave us the 'Englishry' and the 'Welshry'. For 200 years this become the status quo of a Socio - Economic Aparthied. Following on the conquest of 1282, a Welsh Rebellion of 1294 against the ''Edwardian Settlement'' was in response to Taxation, Conscription and Ethnic Cleansing of Welsh from good lands as in Y Perfeddwlad of the new English County of Denbighshire. A further rebellion in the South in 1316 led by Llywelyn Bren was in response to famine and continued high taxation, this concluded with the surrender and execution of Llywelyn Bren. This ''Medieval Welsh Zapata'' of Senghenydd, Carffili, is an hero largelly forgotten but not so Owain Glyndwr and his largelly ''Peasant Uprising'' of 1400 - 16.
.
In wake of this Glyndwr war, over the following century the native population was to reclaim much of the lowlands, and other lands of which their ancestors had been dispossesed. This was made possible by the Glyndwr war having killed many English Colonists, whilst many others had fled back to England and never returned. This left English Lords with out Tennants to farm their lands, and thus they began inviting the Welsh back into the ''Englishries''. Somewhat ironically, the Welsh Natives who re-occupied the Vale of Glamorgan during the 16th century were by the late 18th into 19th centuries returning to the 'Uplands' to become workers in the Iron works and Coal mines. All this led to a lack of farm labour in the Vale, and Land Lords had to invite in English Farm Labourers, so once again the Vale become re-colonised by English Settlers who who would make it as anglicised as it is today.
.
The Act of Annexation 1536 was to be such that it favoured the gentry rather than the tennant farmer or peasant small holder. From the 16th century to the 18th Century Wales as other countries of the British Isles was to witness land enclosure and subsequently Tennant Farmer and Peasant small holder resistance to the gentry land grabbing of common and unused highland wastes. It was resistance to Land enclosures in Caio, West Wales that led to the rallying call of 'Trech Gwlad Nag Arglwydd'. Wales did not witness a land grab on the scale of the Highland Clearences, nor a violent land war has took place in Ireland. Although land disturbences and riots were many throughout the land, not least on Mynydd Bach, Ceredigion in 1826, see book cover opposite. Do obtain, it's an excellent read, it's a pity that there is no good account of Land Enclosures in Wales, there is the book 'Before Rebecca' by David J.V. Jones. On subject of the Rebecca Rural Revolt you will find much on the web, below is a photo of recently unvieled photo of Rebecca Riotors attacking a gate. The Wooden Sculpture is in the West Wales Village of San Cler/Saint Clear, it's great to see our Social History being commemorated this way but I remember a time when it was not.

Some years ago, 25 plus years ago, I endevoured to advance idea of a Memorial (Sculpture/Plaque) to commemorate Rhyfel Y Sais Bach. A meeting was held in a local village hall and a case was made for which there was little local support, some of the excuse by local Welsh were pretty pathetic to say the least, such as ''there was no need for such as they would always remember 1826 in our hearts and minds''. Oh Yea! I was told later, that the real reason for local Welsh reluctance was fear of upsetting English who had settle the area because they needed their support to keep the local School open. Guess what? within a couple of months the School was closed down, and it's fact not ''racist'' if I make known the fact that today there are possibly more English settled on and around area of Mynydd Bach than native Welsh. No! still no Remember 1826 Memorial but plenty of Windmills about area of Mynydd Bach. Hopefully, now a brilliant little book has been published on Rhyfel y Sais Bach, it might enspire Ceredigion Patriots to begin work towards advancing a memorial, possibly in Trefenter? Whatever, I urge one and all to visit the area, and surely the whole theme of the story, lends itself great to a Welsh Land & Liberty/Wales is Not for Sale gathering, maybe an annual rally.
.
Anyway, where was I, ah yes! Enclosures, great area here for some one to do some major research and study on this subject in Welsh History, who out there amongst you wants to volunteer to become a Welsh Remembrancer and Hedge Teacher, specialising in this subject. I suggest it needs to be some one who has a good interest in Land and Liberty, in the past and in the present, see link >>> TLIO - The Land Is Ours- Homepage. Campaigning for Access to the Land. The Land will cover UK & International land campaigns - peasant ... We will start by producing 2 issues a year, but aim to bring it up to 3 or 4 per year. ...www.tlio.org.uk/ - 15k - Cached - Similar pages . Maybe we need a Welsh 'LAND & LIBERTY LEAGUE' to be established in our times, these themes I shall continue over at RED REMEMBRANCER at http://redremembrancer.blogspot.com

It might appear that I have wandered away from main purpose of post in first place, but no! as I am taking you in a certain direction. This year I shall be focusing a great deal on 1848 'The Year of Revolution' aka 'The Spring of Nations', there is a prologue to 1848, that begins in 1815/16 and comes to major conclusions between 1831 and 1839, both in Wales and in Europe. The epilogue to 1848, are the years leading up to the Paris Commune of 1871 & beyond, these are long periods of history and I only label them prologues and epilogues to serve my 1848 focus and regular blog posting purpose this year.

Crucial throughout this century is understanding both rural agrarian and urbanizing Industrial societies, again in Wales and Europe. For in this period we witness Rural Labourers becoming Industrial workers, and also peasants are made citizens, see link here as starter in this area of study >>> http://www.beyondbooks.com:80/eur12/2c.asp?pf=on In a Welsh context the ''Peasant'' sure enough becomes an Industrial Worker, and this is crucial to our understanding of the events of 1831, particularlly in Pentre Penderyn and Hirwaun, Lewis Lewis connection. Not then with out implications regards Merthyr 1831 and Newport 1839 on to the Wales of 1848, from here we see a ''Cultural Nationalist Wales'' politicising itself. This of course leads toward Cymru Fydd and a Wales of Tithe Wars in the 1880's rather than of a Land War, these are the years of Welsh Radical Liberalism, of Cymru Fydd. However, the dream of turning Welsh Peasants or Workers into ''Welsh Citizens'' fails, instead they become British Citizens. It's a tangled and still controversial story that still motivates and influences Welsh Politics today, as example of recent controversy over the ''Chartist Legacy'' and who owns it? Plaid or Labour (see a future post on this subject). But first more on 1848! all to be posted in this blog: The Welsh Patriot.
