LATIN AMERICA'S WARS OF NATIONAL LIBERATION 1810 - 2010 200th Anniversary Commemoration.

A compatriot following in footsteps of the Irish/British Legion recently sent me this post card, check out further information on the web, google Cerro de la Gloria. Owain Glyndwr eat your heart out! I would rather WAG give money and Patriots donated to funds for a memorial on scale of below to Owain Glydwr's 'Grand Army of National Liberation' atop Penrallt, Machynlleth or maybe atop Caerdrewyn overlooking Corwen, than a crumbling down wall with some 40 year old slogan on it. I don't think that £80. 000 is money well spent, do you? really!!!

For a good history of Latin America's Wars of National Liberation? Not for the native population however? Keep that in mind and note that their Freedom Struggles continues to this day, will do a post on this soon and put the Patagonia Welsh Colony into a rather deeper 'insight' in this context, after all were our Welsh Settlers any different from all the European Settlers who helped colonise the land of Native Peoples who at the same time were facing ''Indian Wars'' in Latin America every bit as harsh as in the USA. Whatever, do read this and other books on subjects associated with the 1810 - 2010 Anniversary Commemoration. By the way, there were Welsh volunteers in the Irish/British Legion, not very well informed on but search web anyway for refs to this Post Napoleonic War Legion of Volunteers/Mercenaries, interesting stuff. I am amazed there has not been any fictional treatment of this in books or films, desperately waiting to be done.

FOWARD WITH A WELSH REPUBLICAN CHARTER 2009

I am cynical regards latter day attempts to re-establish a Welsh Republican Movement as example of Cymru Rydd and a web site going by the name of Young Republicans, if that's not the remnant of Cymru Rydd or MI5 I may be knocked down with a feather. Whilst Balchder Cymru likes to call itself Republican from time to time, in reality they might as well just describe themselves 'Welsh Monarchists' as they have attended more events associated with such than may be associated with Republicanism in Wales, of any description. One can only be pessimistic as to the chances of ever seeing arise another Welsh Republican Movement, that would be the IV, if such was founded. For the most part Republicanism in Wales has been of the 'British Tradition', from time of Iolo Morgannwg to those in the Labour Party today, even PLAID ''Welsh Republicans'' tend to be of the 'Guardian British Tendancy'.

There are then ''Retro Romantic Republicans'' of the 'Garibaldi Kind', followers of Cayo & Coslets brand of Militant Nationalism , and later the radical 'Cultural Republicanism of Niel ap Siencyn and Gareth ap Sion, also Y Cyfamodwyr followed in these footsteps. There has been in the WSRM a Republicanism of the 'Mazzini Kind' although that seems to have become totally extinct with most of their members retreating back into PLAID, or in case of Robert Griffiths into the Welsh Communist Party, whilst Gareth Westacott has become a folk musician and Dewi Day Parader about Caerdydd once a year. Unfortunately the founders of the first true Welsh Republicanism are in exile or have passed away, that only leaves as whom I consider ''proper'' Welsh Republicans to my knowledge; Sue Davies and David Lawrence, there must be others?

So I do not hold out much hope of there ever being a Welsh Republican Movement IV, but it has been suggested to me why not start up discussion and debate on the subject of 'Whither Welsh Republicanism' to run along side the Chartist Commemoration 2009 - 2010 now being organised in the Southern 'Cordell Country'. Such D&D can take place during social 'get togethers' associated with the commemoration programme, do note there is an event in Merthyr Tudful this Saturday 15 Awst 2009 (Google Web for Info). To give such D&D more practical purpose, why not focus attention on seeing that if by next year Welsh Republicans can deliver up a WELSH REPUBLICAN CHARTER.

It has often crossed my mind, thinking that would a Welsh Republicanism be in a better state to day if most of the members of WRM I had on it's collapse joined the Labour Party in Wales and not PLAID where any proper ''Welsh Republicanism'' has got sacrificed on the alter of 'Cultural Nationalism' or on the fringe got carried away in attempts to copy Ireland's example, 1916 and all that! Whatever, if ''Welsh Republicans'' are serious about wanting to re-establish a WRM IV then they are going to have to give up all this infatuation with Welsh Princes, forgetting Rally Cilmeri, also Saints, and forgetting Dewi Day Parading. This time around there is a great need to start to get down to some serious study of Welsh radical history, and also some for real Welsh Republican Political Action.

WELSH REPUBLICANS LOOK LEFT AND LOOK SOUTH, Forget The Romanticism - It's Time To Get Radical!

I have on video record a real star ''Good Ole Boy'' and long time frequenter of Cilmeri arguing with Cayo about Nationalism, and the 'GOB' saying he had no time for Welsh or English Princes as he was a ''Republican''. If so certainly he would be a 'Right Wing Republican', but in fact I would say he was more of a 'Careerist' but down through the years he has been a most regular in rallying to Cilmeri kind of Patriot. Yes! there for the beer, more than any other reason, but whatever certainly not there for any Republican reasons. However, he is not alone amongst the frequenters of Tafarn Llywelyn and attendees of Rali Cilmeri from earliest of Patriotic Front days, to the days of Pobl Cofiwn and Cyfamodwyr to Balchder Cymru in particular of recent times who proclaim themselves to be ''Welsh Republicans''. If they are so Republican, you may ask, why constantly turn out at Rali Cilmeri or at some other commemoration for Welsh Princes, inc Owain Glyndwr who when all said and done was not a Republican but of course a Monarchist!

This foolish Political Confusion was in fact planted on Patriots way 'Back in the Day' when arch mystic Patriotic Bard and WRM I member Harri Web was amongst those members of a 'Left of centre' progressive Plaid Cymru faction called NEW NATION who launched their magazine CILMERI at Cilmeri in, I believe 1964? Why these largely Republican Progressives did so at Cilmeri, defeats me but the Patriotic Front followed in their footsteps and founded Rali Cilmeri in 1965. Since, all elements and fringe factions which I place under collective title of an 'Alternative Welsh Nationalist Movement & Struggle', have generally seen Cilmeri has their spiritual home and annual kind of 'Hyde Park Speakers Corner'.

Personally, I have long considered Rali Cilmeri to have reached it's 'Use By Date' and this year it has been proved to me that it serves no great Patriotic let alone Political purpose. I would seriously suggest that hence fourth those of serious Political Republican intent, if wishing to see Welsh Republicanism, not just it's flag but Welsh Republican Principles be re founded as basis for a possible revived true radical Welsh Republicanism and maybe a restored WELSH REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT. Then I suggest you forget all about 1282 and indeed adopt 1797 as your YEAR ZERO, thereafter the years as 1816, 1831, 1835 and 1839 down to 1910 and 1911, 1926, 1935 become worthy of your attention and commemoration and not years way back in the middle ages in which Welsh Republicanism did not remotely exist.

If indeed you are of serious mind regards your Welsh Republicanism, I suggest that you are more likely to find it in the Chartist Commemoration detailed here than at an Eisteddfod or such as Rali Cilmeri. So, consider attending the below and supporting future commemorative events to mark anniversaries of 1910 and 1911 in 2010 and 2011.

You have probably missed earlier events but note fourth coming events above and below, not least those commemorating the Newport Rising in November, do make every effort to attend. Do note organisers of this Chartist Commemoration are attempting to launch a new Charter, and still a very British Republican one, although in 1839 - 48, even Welsh Chartists were calling for a Charter For England, not for Wales or even Britain. There is even argument, if or not the Welsh Chartists were out to establish a 'Welsh Republic' or at least a 'Silurian Republic'. Historian Ifor Wilkes suggests they were, but John Humphries argues no! However, Chartist Henry Vincent speaking in Gwent did say Wales would make a fine Republic?

Whatever, Welsh Republicans I suggest start considering the framing of their own Welsh Republican Charter for Wales, plenty of time to discuss and debate such over the months ahead, To possibly sometime next year call a Welsh Republican Charter Convention in Llanidloes maybe, to dot the i's and cross the t's, and make ready to publish sometime during 2010. At Blaenafon, Oh alright then perhaps in association with the National Eisteddfod being held in Gwent, in respect to an earlier Republican Iolo Morgannwg, although even he was more the British Republican than a Welsh Republican.

Right then, get cracking making Welsh Republican Flags, Sashes and Ribbons, lets see a good turn out of Welsh Republicans at these Chartist Commemoration events, not least at the Newport 1839 Rising Commemoration. C'mon now, it want cost a lot and only a little time, this time around lets see loads of Welsh Republican flags in the march on the Westgate Hotel or where ever it might be heading for. If you cannot sew, do what I did to make a flag, use fabric glue and books to weigh down on as the cloth bonded.

A WELSH REPUBLICAN DECLARATION RENEWED: A Post Script In Memory Of Welsh Republican Pedr Lewis.

In my short tribute to Pedr Lewis at his funeral (see foto tribute in previous post), I concluded by inviting those present to make or renew a Welsh Republican Declaration - Patriotic Pledge as decribed below. Those who did not do so at the conclusion of the funeral service may with others not present think on the below, and in good time come to make such declaration pledge in their own good time as an individual act, or in the company of others upon possibly establishing a local Welsh Republican Club. Perhaps even at an event, protest or commemoration, where ever you may have need to rise up a Welsh Republican Flag symbolically or in real struggle.

However, certainly not in association with Rali Cilmeri or Dydd Dewi day parading down into Bae Cardydd to patronise the Politically bankrupt and corrupt at the Assembly of Devolved Dilettantism No! No! No! for if a true Welsh Republicanism is to be restored then those with any Welsh Republican sentiment really must think it through, we can have no more of the nonsensical Retro Romantic so called ''Welsh Republicanism'' of the 60's, nor of the later Cultural Nationalist so called ''Welsh Republicanism'' of WRM II and Cyfamodwyr. Nor do we need a repeat of the knee jerking super patriotism of the post Millenium now demised Cymru Rydd, No! No! No!

Any restored new Welsh Republicanism needs to look to what may be seen has its roots with Iolo Morgannwg and Henry Davies et al in the 18th Century, whilst Internationally looking to Mazzini not Garibaldi. But then foundations may be restored by seeking inspiration in Welsh Republican Movement I and also a later Welsh Socialist Republican Movement. However, be in no haste for if there is to be restored, a renewed more successful Welsh Republican Movement III then it really must be thought through and not rushed into, to quickly fall apart again. I suggest first and foremost those of a Welsh Republican mind establish local Republican (Discussion & Debating) Clubs, then such clubs establish Regional and National Welsh Republican Directorates to in main bring together thinking on Welsh Republicanism in annual Welsh Republican Conventions.

But more importantly such Welsh Republican Directorates ensure that there is always to the fore a Welsh Republican Resistance to the English Crown claiming Sovereignty over our Country, Communities and Peoples. Such struggle being in voicing Anti - English Monarchy opinion in the media and in protest action as Welsh Republican Flag and Poster Campaigns at the very least, if not actual demonstrations against visits of the English Monarchy to Wales. Whatever, as you think over these matters at least do so while your making a Welsh Republcan Tri-colour Ribbon to wear or flag to carry at events or on demonstrations, that will be a positive start, yes!

PS: Has I have stated in other blog posts, personally I think the man best talking up on Welsh Republicanism today, is David Lawrence of Caerdydd. Further, it is my personal opinion that any future revived Welsh Republicanism will more likely all the better arise in the South, and more in Socialist circles than cultural nationalist circles and as for the Eisteddfod, forget it! Get Real!

PPS: It must be said that the lack of any major patriotic opposition (apart from Balchder Cymru action) to the 1st July 1969 - 2009 40th Investiture Anniversary English Monarchist 'Shower of Shite' poured over our poor Welsh Heads was quite patriotically pathetic to say the least. Where were any Welsh Republican representatives, even PLAID's Adam, Leanne and Bethan had gone very silent. Instead we had representatives of largely Guardian Newspapers inspired 'British Republicanism' doing all the talking and rather badly too in trying to tag on a Welsh context. C'mon Welsh Republicans, GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!
